According to Bud Koucky, this is a picture from 1916/1917 "before the boys go off to war". My mother Lydia remembers that Joe was always interested in new things and had bought the camera. You can almost see the string in Ed's left hand which opened the shutter on the camera. It appears that this photo is reversed as you will see in later pictures. In that case, the string would be in Ed's right hand.
